Post between the UK and Burgundy: plan both directions
Keeping UK and French addresses? Plan the two postal routes, international redirection exclusions and letters with important deadlines.

Contents
You are staying in Burgundy when an important letter reaches your UK address. On your return, another arrives at the French house. Redirection can help, but one arrangement does not cover every journey or every type of item. Start by drawing two separate routes: post leaving your UK address and post leaving your address in France.
The UK departure is a Royal Mail question
Royal Mail offers redirection from a UK address overseas, but does not redirect from another country into the UK. Its international conditions exclude certain sizes, items appearing to contain goods and several tracked or signed-for services. A redirection agreement therefore does not mean that everything addressed to you will be forwarded.
Sort your regular senders into categories: official documents, banking correspondence, personal letters, purchases and subscriptions. Identify items that may fall outside the service. For an important document expected on a particular date, agree the destination and delivery method with the sender. An international onward journey should not be assumed to preserve a delivery time quoted for the original UK service.
The French departure needs its own arrangement
La Poste’s temporary international redirection service addresses the other route. Its service page describes periods from fifteen days to a year and international exclusions, including parcels. Check the selected product and current conditions before ordering. Temporary absence and a permanent move are different needs.
Write down the people covered, the names actually used by senders, the complete destination and the required dates. A shared surname does not describe every household arrangement. Then check the confirmation of the effective start date. Submitting an application and having an active service are separate stages, especially when you are organising several parts of a move at once.
Avoid a redirection loop
Do not assume that simultaneous instructions in both countries will make letters follow you automatically between houses. Give each period a clear destination. If plans change, consult the relevant operator’s amendment rules; a second redirection should not be treated as an unchecked way to repair the first.
A useful working sheet has seven fields: departure address, included recipients, destination, effective start, end date, exclusions and the contact for a problem. Add a reminder before your return journey. Leaving Beaune or Dijon does not necessarily stop a postal service you arranged earlier. Equally, the expiry of that service does not update every sender’s records.
Deal with deadlines through the organisation concerned
An invoice or request for documents can still have a deadline while you are away. Ask important organisations which correspondence address they have recorded and which online notifications are available. Follow their own procedure when updating a file. Postal forwarding is a delivery arrangement, not a substitute for every notification a bank, insurer or public body may require.
Keep a correspondence address separate from conclusions about your legal situation. Receiving mail in one country does not, by itself, determine tax residence or permission to stay. Give each organisation the accurate information it requests rather than treating a convenient delivery address as a general declaration about where you live.
Check the ordinary details at the house
Before the first absence, confirm the name on the letterbox, how the delivery address identifies the dwelling and whether postal access is straightforward. Where someone has agreed to help, define the practical task and protect private correspondence. Having a spare key does not automatically mean that person has agreed to open or manage your letters.
The second-home guide covers the wider arrangements. For available information about a Côte-d’Or property, contact Shawez Ali, agent immobilier. A clear postal plan gives each journey an operator, a destination and an end date. It is much more dependable than expecting an important envelope to catch up with your next trip.
