A UK driving licence when settling in Burgundy
Planning a Burgundy move? Separate your UK licence, residence situation and vehicle registration before relying on the car for everyday life.

Contents
Your Burgundy house plans rely on a car for shopping and everyday journeys. You have considered moving the vehicle, but have you checked your British driving licence? The driver’s paperwork is separate from registering the car. Relevant questions include your residence situation, the history of the licence and the exchange rules that apply to it.
Start with the driver rather than the number plate
Visiting a second home and settling in France do not raise exactly the same question. Describe the actual situation before selecting a procedure. Buying a house does not, by itself, establish normal residence or determine the validity of a licence. Another owner’s experience may relate to a different arrival date or a different type of title.
Service Public distinguishes British licences issued before 2021 from those issued from 2021 onwards when considering a move to France. Examine that distinction against your own documents rather than assuming one rule covers every British buyer.
Recover the dates behind the card
Prepare the date of first entitlement, renewals or previous exchanges, expiry date and categories held. A recently renewed photocard does not describe the entire history of the licence. If different dates appear to lead to different answers, ask France Titres to clarify your situation rather than selecting whichever interpretation seems more convenient.
Service Public sets out the exchange rules: qualifying pre-2021 British licences remain recognised while valid, with specified events requiring exchange. For licences issued from 2021, exchange is required when settling in France; the general recognition period is one year from acquiring normal residence. Specific situations, including certain student residence statuses, have different rules. Have the applicable category and starting date established from your circumstances.
Identify the correct British licensing authority
Not every supporting record comes from the same organisation. GOV.UK distinguishes DVLA for English, Welsh and Scottish licences from DVA for Northern Ireland when describing evidence for exchange. A document from another body should not simply be assumed to replace the requested evidence.
Keep readable copies of useful records securely. Check the current document list and procedure on the official service when preparing the application. Even a recent recollection of the process does not establish that a new file is complete. Login credentials remain personal; an adviser helping to understand requirements does not need to receive them.
An application is not a general driving permission
If exchange is required, follow the application status and the exact nature of any document issued. An acknowledgement, a request for additional information and a document authorising driving are not interchangeable. Establish what permits you to drive in your circumstances while the file is being processed. Do not extend an expired licence’s validity yourself because an application is pending.
In parallel, address vehicle insurance and French registration where required. An answer about the licence does not establish insurance cover. Registration of the car does not establish that every household member may drive it. Check the position of each person who will actually use the vehicle, particularly if you expect to share longer journeys.
Connect the check to your property choice
If the household relies on one driver, consider how the first weeks would function if a necessary process remained incomplete. This does not predict a problem; it avoids building the entire plan around an assumed administrative date. The guide to reaching Dijon helps identify travel possibilities to examine separately.
When searching in Côte-d’Or, explain your mobility needs to Shawez Ali, agent immobilier. The appropriate authorities will confirm the driving entitlement. You can then assess the house, its access and your move using separate answers, rather than one broad assurance that everything concerning the car has been sorted.
