Working from Burgundy for a US employer: what to clarify
Separate employer approval, immigration, social coverage and property requirements before basing a Burgundy purchase on remote work.

Contents
You picture several months in Burgundy, a room for an office, and your American job continuing remotely. The property requirements seem straightforward: somewhere quiet and a suitable connection. Those features do not answer the questions that determine whether the arrangement can work. Before choosing a home near Dijon or Beaune on that basis, separate approval of the working arrangement from assessment of the building. A good office does not establish an immigration status, and an encouraging conversation does not define every employer responsibility.
Describe the work before searching for the office
Write down what you would actually do while in France: proposed duration, dates, duties, working hours, professional contacts, and possible business travel. Distinguish vacation days without work from working days. Avoid describing the plan as “occasional emails” if it really means continuing your normal role. The account should help the relevant people understand the arrangement, rather than present only the elements that sound easiest to approve.
Identify the variables as well. A single stay differs from a continuing relocation; a personal decision to spend time abroad is not automatically an employer-organized assignment. You should not select the most convenient legal classification yourself. You can, however, supply an accurate scenario and ask which reviews and permissions are necessary before treating it as agreed. That factual description is the foundation for the employer's and advisers' separate assessments.
Obtain an employer position on the actual arrangement
Send the proposal to the person or department authorized to consider it. A manager's acceptance of meeting hours may not address payroll, information security, data handling, or company responsibility. Ask which areas require review and who will handle each one. Retain a response defining the accepted scope, limits, and outstanding conditions instead of relying on a general suggestion that working from the house should be fine.
Also clarify what happens if dates change or the stay becomes longer than planned. Approval of one scenario should not be reused for a different arrangement without further examination. This matters to the property choice: the home should still fit your plans if the intended pattern of working visits is not approved. Avoid making an essential purchase assumption depend on an authorization that has only been discussed informally.
Examine immigration without assuming a remote-work exception
Owning a home does not establish the conditions under which you may work there. France-Visas describes the long-stay visitor route as a stay without professional activity. Do not assume that being paid in the United States automatically makes every working arrangement compatible with that status. Have the specific activity and circumstances assessed through the appropriate channels before building your purchase timetable around that assumption.
Use official information to prepare focused questions, then keep the response relevant to your case. Another homeowner's account of their experience is not a decision about your situation. If the intended status does not fit the proposed activity, reconsider the plan with suitable advice. Describing the same activity differently merely to make it appear to fit a category does not resolve the underlying issue or create a reliable basis for a purchase.
Keep social coverage and tax analysis separate
The Social Security Administration explains the France–United States social security agreement. The agreement's existence does not establish that your personal arrangement automatically retains the same system, contributions, or coverage. Ask which institutions, documents, and steps apply to the scenario being considered. The analysis should follow the actual work rather than an assumption that your presence abroad qualifies as a particular kind of assignment.
Tax questions also need separate consideration. An employer's remote-work approval does not itself determine tax residence or every obligation of the parties. Supply dates and the proposed organization to the relevant advisers. The guide to preparing a French-property US tax consultation helps organize facts and questions; it does not supply a personal conclusion. Keep these reviews connected by the same factual scenario while allowing each professional to address their own area.
Translate the answers into property requirements
Once the arrangement is clarified, specify what the home needs: somewhere to speak, separation from other occupants, comfortable use during your actual working hours, and connectivity to verify for the address and installation. Test what can be tested. A commercial label, coverage advertised for the wider commune, or an attractive office photograph does not establish your future working experience in that room.
When comparing Côte-d’Or properties, give Shawez Ali, real estate agent, the housing requirements resulting from those decisions without asking the agent to validate your employment or status. You can then reject unsuitable homes for concrete reasons and continue with a purchase whose essential assumptions have been examined. The office becomes a meaningful property criterion after the working arrangement is understood, rather than a substitute for resolving it.
